12.  Electrochemical Degradation of Nonylphenol Poliethoxylate at Ti/RuO2/SnO2-Sb2O5 Anodes

Abstract:

The aim of this study was the degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylate with 9 ethoxy units (NP9EO) in aqueous solution at Ti/RuO2/SnO2-Sb2O5 anodes. The anodes were prepared by thermal decomposition of appropriate precursors. The experiments were carried out by using 0.1 g/L NP9EO in 0.1 M Na2SO4 as supporting electrolyte, applied current densities of 25, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 300 A/m2 at various electrolysis time. The UV spectra of the electrolysed solutions were recorded and the residual concentration of NP9EO was determined. The UV spectra showed that no detectable intermediates were noticed during the electrochemical oxidation of NP9EO at Ti/RuO2/SnO2-Sb2O5 anodes. This finding suggests the electrochemical combustion of the pollutant. The removal efficiency of NP9EO was 86% for an applied current density of 300 A/m2 and 120 minutes of electrolysis.
