Abstract:
The present paper describes our researches focused towards the development of a direct methanol fuel cell equipped with an anion exchange membrane. The transition from proton exchange membranes to anion exchange membranes requires the change of acid with alkaline media and allows the replacement of platinum electrocatalysts with nickel based electrodes. Our studies have shown that skeleton nickel electrodes present a good catalytic activity towards methanol oxidation reaction. Best results were obtained for high methanol concentrations and increased temperatures, e.g. the open circuit voltage was 0.975 V, the maximum current and power were 1.8 mA, respectively 0.6 mW.
